Where can I donate toys/gifts to children during this time of the year?

I don’t think that we should donate toys/gifts around Christmas time only.. it should be all year long! My daughter is having a first year birthday party and there’s isn’t anything she needs but family. (she’s turning one she can survive without toys) I want to donate all the toys she gets in her name but I can not find any toy drives around here. (I live in the bay area of CA)

You are so sweet. Check with shelters for abused women. Women often arrive at such shelters with only their kids and the clothes on their backs. Toys are most likely needed there year-round. Or, you could check a children’s hospital, especially a cancer hospital for children.
There should be more people like you.

Get in touch with your local Boys and Girls Clubs. Or a local homeless shelter. I think it’s awesome that you want to brighten a child’s day! Good Luck!
I don’t know how you would get them there,but my auxiliary recently found out about the plight of children in the Appalachian mountains of VA,WV and KY.the job market there is slim to none and these kids don’t have shoes,coats, clothes ,food ,or school supplies.They don’t even have toothpaste,toothbrushes,and other basic needs.They definitely don’t receive toys.They are so happy to receive anything we take them and they are so grateful.I can’t help but cry when I think that this is the USA in 2008 and we don’t help our own people here but help kids oversees.I think you can look on the Internet and find out about church mission groups there that help the people of the Appalachian mountains.
Look and see if you have a Santa Claus incorp. They are a wonderful group of people that the toys go to needy families. These people work hard all year long to get used and new toys ready for the holiday season.
edit- If you give them to the salvation army or goodwill they will just sell them
Rather than donating gifts intended for your daughter, I recommend that you notify potential gift givers that to celebrate her birthday you’d like them to choose a present intended for a child in need. That way family & friends w/not feel their gifts have been slighted, & they can participate in the double joy of celebrating your child’s day of birth & giving to a child who is not so fortunate.
If you intend to make birthday donations an annual tradition, do make sure this is a joyous way to celebrate for your daughter, too. Ensure that her day is one that is special so that there is no possibility of resentment. As a doting great-grandmother, I would also caution you to not totally deny desires to provide your child w/family gifts. I like to encourage charitable giving, but I would strongly defend my right to buy birthday dolls for any little girl in my family!
My final recommendation would be to know that rule-making can come back to bite you in the derriere. Share your charitable goals, but allow family & friends to choose their participation. Be flexible, & understand that even strong family traditions can be altered in time as needs change.
